چکیده

Stars destroy lithium (Li) in their normal evolution. The convective envelopes of evolved red giants reach temperatures of millions of K, hot enough for the Li(p, α)He reaction to burn Li efficiently. Only about 1% of first-ascent red giants more luminous than the luminosity function bump in the red giant branch exhibit A(Li) > 1.5. Nonetheless, Li-rich red giants do exist. We present 15 Li-rich red giants—14 of which are new discoveries—among a sample of 2054 red giants in Milky Way dwarf satellite galaxies. Our sample more than doubles the number of low-mass, metal-poor ([Fe/H] . −0.7) Li-rich red giants, and it includes the most-metal poor Li-enhanced star known ([Fe/H] = −2.82, A(Li)NLTE = 3.15). Because most of these stars have Li abundances larger than the universe’s primordial value, the Li in these stars must have been created rather than saved from destruction. These Li-rich stars appear like other stars in the same galaxies in every measurable regard other than Li abundance. We consider the possibility that Li enrichment is a universal phase of evolution that affects all stars, and it seems rare only because it is brief. Lithium-ri h giants in the Sagittarius dSph Tidal Streams

The nature and origin of Lithium rich giant stars is still matter of debate. In the contest of our spectroscopic survey of giants in the tidal streams of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, we present the serendipitous discovery of 2 super Li-rich stars (A(Li)>3.54.0). Besides D461 in Draco, these are the only Li-rich stars known in a Local Group dSph galaxy. The high Li abundance a...

2 00 4 ‘ Sculptor ’ - ing the Galaxy ? The Chemical Compositions of Red Giants in the Sculptor Dwarf

We have used high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the VLT and UVES to determine abundances of 17 elements in 4 red giants in the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Our [Fe/H] values range from –2.10 to –0.97, confirming previous findings of a large metallicity spread. We have combined our data with similar data for five Sculptor giants studied recently by Shetrone et al. t...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Internal Kinematics of the Andromeda Ii Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

The High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer on the Keck I telescope has been used to measure nine radial velocities having a median precision of ' 2 km s−1 for seven red giants belonging to the isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxy Andromeda II (And II). We find a weighted mean radial velocity of vr = –188±3 km s−1 and a central velocity dispersion of σ0 = 9.3 −2.6 km s −1. There may be evidence for a ...

Abundances of Red Giants in the Andromeda Ii Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

We have obtained spectra for 50 candidate red giants in Andromeda II, a dwarf spheroidal companion of M31, using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrometer on the Keck II telescope. After eliminating background galaxies and Galactic foreground stars, we are left with a sample of 42 red giants for which membership in Andromeda II can be established unambiguously from radial velocities. Line indices...
